Diversity Day Episode Summary
"Diversity Day" was the second episode of The Office airing on NBC. Someone named Mr. Brown comes into Dunder-Mifflin's Scranton branch to talk about diversity. This is due to complaints against Michael Scott's poor Chris Rock routine:
Basically, there are two types of black people. And black people are actually more racist, because they hate the other type of black people. See, every time the one type wants to have a good time, then the other type comes in and makes a real mess...
Michael disliked the diversity agenda that Mr. Brown was giving so he decides to hold his own diversity workshop. He had his employees put an index card on his forehead labeled with a certain minority group. Each person had to guess what minority they represented by having their coworkers stereotype them. Pam Beesley got Jewish, Stanley got 'Black', Dwight Schrute got Asian, Angela got 'Jamaican', and Michael Scott gave himself 'The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.'
Pam: "Okay. If I have to do this, based on stereotypes that are totally untrue, t hat I do not agree with, you would maybe not be a very good driver."
Dwight: "Oh man! Am I a woman?"
This episode is hilarious! If you've ever worked in a corporate environment, there is usually a group focused on diversity. Is it because it's the right thing to do? Is it because it makes a company look respectable? Is it because they have to? Put an index card on your forehead and walk into work tomorrow! Other sub themes of this episode involves Jim trying to avoid distractions to close out a sale worth 25% of his commission.
