Health Care Episode Summary

"Health Care" is the third episode of the first season of The Office airing in the U.S. on April 5, 2006. Jan tells Michael Scott that he needs to pick a chaper health care plan for his employees. Michael Scott doesn't want to be the one who breaks the bad news to the office, so he charges Dwight Schrute with the responsibility of choosing the new and cheaper health care plan. Dwight Schrute then gets a temporary work space, which he tries to portray as his personal office, in order to complete the project.

Dwight Schrute at first cuts everyone's benefits, but Michael Scott tries to reassure everyone by telling Dwight to pick another plan. Michael also promised a surprise at the end of the day. Dwight continues to decide on which health care plan to choose by having everyone in the office disclose any illness or medical conditions. Jim and Pam decide to take advantage of Dwight by making up fake diseases.

While the whole health care theme is going on in the office, there is a sub-plot with Michael where he leaves the office and tries to find something to surprise his employees with. He failed on possible surprises including a trip to Atlantic City, a trip to a coal mine, and even riding the coal mine elevator.

By the end of the day, Dwight chooses a very cheap health care plan that eliminated alot of the employees' benefits. Michael Scott then blames Dwight for choosing a poor health care plan to cover his own ass! He then tries to be the hero by surprising everyone with an ice cream sandwich, but when Stanley asks what the real suprise is, Michale is unable to come up with anything and everyone leaves the office in dissapointment.
