Basketball Episode Summary
"Basketball" is the fifth episode of the first season of the television comedy: The Office (U.S.) airing on April 19, 2005. Michael Scott and his office employees challenge the warehouse crew to a game of basketball at the basketball court located in the warehouse. The winning team works the Saturday shift. Michael chooses Jim (used to play on a basketball team), Ryan, Stanley (Michael assumes Stanley is good because he is black, but he actually ends up being horrible), Dwight, and Phyllis (Michael thinks she would have been a disgusting cheerleader) to play ball on his team.
The game begins with alot of focus on the competition between Roy (Pam's fiance) and Jim. This resembles the competition Jim has with Roy in winning Pam's heart! There is also alot of comedy during the game (Dwight is matched up against a built woman, the two black warehouse workers show their intimidation, Michael Scott can't make a shot for his life, Dwight steals the ball from his own team mate, etc...) The game ends when Michael is accidentally hit in the face, and decides that they win because they were up by one up to that time. However, the warehouse workers intimidate Michael and his team ends up having to come to work on Saturday.
By the end of the episode, Michael tells his employees that they don't have to come in on Saturday. ("Like coming in an extra day is going to prevent us from being downsized.") Also, Kevin, who was not picked to play on the team, is shown shooting hoops and making every shot in after the game.
I definitely recommend watching this episode! I used to work at an office where we would play basketball against the mailroom folks during lunch time!
